5 Common Reasons Why Kids Develop Problem Behaviors
Childhood is a stage before adulthood. Child psychology is associated with personal and social development and the changes a kid goes through before stepping into adulthood. Experts studied the psychology of children through various perspectives including problems they face from nature or environment.
Different events that take place in the environment have adverse impacts on children. Their minds are changeable and extremely impressionable and are vulnerable at the same time. Events that are not important to children leave behind scars in their minds. Therefore, childhood memories and events are prime factors in the development of adult personality. Some major factors are:
1. Loss or achieving of friends
2. Divorce or separation between parents
3. Violence or domestic abuse
4. Death of a family member or friend
5. Natural calamities such as floods and earthquake
Researchers have emphasized the importance of mother as a primary caretaker in a child's life. Maternal deprivation leads to severe mental ailments in children. Breast-feeding plays an important part in developing physical closeness between a mother and child. The first emotion that a child experiences after he/she is released form the mother's womb is fear, and physical closeness of a mother instills confidence in the child.
Dealing With Problem Children:
No child is perfect. Sometimes, lying and other misbehaviors go beyond limits in kids. When this happens, parents do not know what to do, and hence give strict punishments to their kids.
Punishment is not the right way to handle such type of behaviors. Some of these behaviors are just a normal part of growing up and disappear as they grow up. If parents overact, they may make the problem worse.
Misbehaviors from children mean they are still learning the difference between right and wrong. They may be looking out for ways to learn how to deal to reach others. It may also be an indication that they may be having some kind of trouble. Below are certain guidelines to deal with such misbehaviors of kids:
1. Be sure a problem exists.
2. Make them aware of etiquettes
3. Identify the causes of problem behavior
Common reasons why kids develop problem behaviors:
1. To grab attention/praise
2. To express anger
3. Live up to expectations of parents
4. To avoid punishments
5. To gain friendships
Self Esteem:
Self-esteem means having a good feeling for yourself. It refers to the extent to which you want to be accepted and valued by others. Children with healthy self-esteem think that people around will accept them and that they will have these people around in times of need to take care of them.
On the other hand, children with low self-esteem feel that important people in their lives will not accept them and nobody will come ahead to ensure their safety and well-being. Prejudice and discrimination contribute to low self-esteem in many children.
Education also plays an important role in the development of self-esteem. There are institutions that strive to give the best to children in terms of education. Respect is the cornerstone of a good character. Hence, value the individuality and treat them with due respect. Raise your child with a good character to help him/her make the right decisions in life ahead.
